Stephen K.
Derwelis , D.V.M.
Dr. Stephen K. Derwelis was the top graduate
of his veterinary class at the University of Illinois in 1966, when the
U.S Air Force brought him to New Mexico. As with many, he never wanted
to leave the state, and began his veterinary practice as North Valley
Veterinary Clinic in the Village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque in 1968
as a full-service large and
small animal clinic. In 1990, he limited his practice to horses
and
other equines, primarily performing lameness related diagnosis and
surgery.
Dr. Derwelis is a past Director of the
American
Association of Equine Practitioners, and he has twice served as the
President of the New Mexico Academy of Veterinary Practice, which he
and other New Mexico veterinarians formed to encourage quality
continuing education to be available in the State. Among
participation in numerous other
professional associations, he is a long time member of the Veterinary
Orthopedic Society.
Dr. Derwelis has enjoyed riding horses since he was very
young, and began accompanying his home town veterinarian when he was 5
years old on farm calls and at race tracks. This long-standing interest
has led him to devote his expertise solely to the equine, bringing many
years of experience with pleasure and performance horses of all kinds.
Dr. D enjoys continuing academic pursuits on-line and by
attending
seminars of numerous professional veterinary associations, including
the American Association of Equine Practitioners, the College of
Veterinary Surgeons, the New Mexico Veterinary Medical
Association, Southwest Veterinary Symposium, and the World Equine
Veterinary Association.
